The Columbia Broadcasting System aired their version of the best Super Bowl commercials ever special last night. Unlike many, if not most of similar productions of the past, this one was actually entertaining and enjoyable throughout. This time, with just a couple of exceptions, they actually showed good commercials. I could have surely done without that DISGUSTING puking baby from E*TRADE. Whoever thought or thinks that that is good advertising is an IDIOT and quite frankly needs to be exiled to The Rat Islands, having an unsuitable mindset for living in a civilized society. Same for those STOOPID ass "WHAASUP" ads. Beyond that, and the silly ass frogs commercials, none of which were included, thank God,
IS the king of Super Bowl commercials. Cedric the Entertainer giving his date a beer bath is a hoot.
And the Clydesdales are always magnificently humorous, heartwarming and tear jerkingly tremendous. I was thrilled that several of those made the list, including the very first one and the one that was chosen as best spot. Of course, the best Clydesdale commercial and probably the best Super Bowl commercial period, is the one that only aired once.
At that commercial's end, it goes to black and graphics state "We'll Never Forget." But there surely does seem to be a wide wish for us to not remember.
Pepsi, my lifelong choice of soda was well represented. The Cindy Crawford spot, the Pepsi and Coke vendors in the diner together, and the Coke vendor spilling all the Pepsi cans to the floor in the convenience store. That one still makes me laugh out loud.
Coca Cola's iconic commercial with Pittsburgh Steeler 'Mean' Joe Greene and the kid was high on the list and rightfully so. In a wonderfully warm segment, CBS reunited Greene and Tommy Okon for a very poignant and uplifting interviewing.
One thing with which I was thrilled was that there weren't any car commercials, because by and large, I HATE car commercials. Well, there was one, at the very end. The VW spot with the kid in the Darth Vader costume. It finished second. I wouldn't have placed it that high, but it is one of very few automobile ads that I've ever seen that didn't make me want to turn the channel. But I will admit that I am looking forward to the one this Sunday for the new Buick convertible, as I am all of them, as long as that gross puking baby and those idiotic whaaaasup guys aren't among them.
But most of all, unlike in most years past, I'm looking forward to the sporting event itself, as my hometown team makes their second appearance in the big game. My prediction? Well, my hope:
